Why thenewmad

This is a place to think out loud about two things: the technology that is reshaping how work gets done, and the economics of how countries get richer — especially African countries.

The two subjects are closer than they look. Cheap computation, capable software and increasingly general machines change what a small team, a small firm or a small country can build. Whether that turns into broad prosperity depends on the unglamorous parts: power, logistics, capital, education, rules. So the essays here will move back and forth between the two.

What to expect

Mostly long-form pieces: research write-ups, arguments, and ideas that are not finished yet. Some will be wrong. The goal is to reason in public and improve through feedback.1

Why it looks like this

The site is plain HTML and one small stylesheet. No scripts, no tracking, no web fonts. A page is a few kilobytes, which matters when many readers are on slow or expensive mobile data. The writing is the point; everything else should get out of the way.

  1. Footnotes work like this: a marker in the text, and the note at the bottom of the page. ↩︎
